Six Year! WOW!

Another year has passed with the gift of life which I received from mum six years ago! It has been a year of ups and downs, with actually way too many downs.

The Pirate FM Awards

In April last year I had the honour of receiving the "Sporting Achievement Award" at the Pirate FM Local Hero Awards.  Trev had put my name forward unknowingly to me and I won!  You can read more in my blog HERE.

Poorly Mum

At the Pirate FM awards ceremony, mum wasn't very well.  In fact she wasn't well for a very long time with several long stays in hospital and two operations.  Mum was not actually beginning to feel better until late August.  I'm pleased to report that mum is back to her normal self again now.

The British Transplant Games

The British Transplant Games were in Liverpool last year at the end of July.  As is always the case, the Plymouth Team was small but mighty!  Winning 25 medals between just 7 athletes!

I struggled with my swimming due to a shoulder injury but I still gave it my all coming home with three gold and two silver medals!  The shoulder hurt like mad whilst I was swimming, but it was worth the pain!  I needed to put in a strong performance if I wanted to be selected for Team GB again!

Sad Times

In late August we had the devastating news that my dad had suffered a cardiac arrest and he passed away a week later, he was a young and fit 71 year old.  Next I lost a dear friend and Colleague, Fran and then later that month my Uncle Adrian passed away during an operation, he was only in his late 50's.

In the past two years my poor mum has lost her brother Steven, her mum Valerie and then her other brother Adrian.  Its been a hard few years all round.

The World Transplant Games

I have once again been selected to represent Team GB at the World Transplant Games which is taking place in Malaga in 2017.  I'm so proud to have been selected again :-)

If you could spare a few pence and sponsor me it would be really appreciated as we do not have any help in attending these international event.  The Just Giving link is HERE.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Helstonbury Music Festival in Helston for sponsoring me to the sum of £1,000 which has got me well on the way with my fund raising.

Trev's Knee

The year continued its ups and downs with Trev suffering with an extreme crazy golf injury!  Whilst on holiday Trev hurt his knee, it was an enormous bruise with a small graze.  We thought nothing of it and continued our holiday.

A week after we arrived home Trev was in a lot of pain and I took him to A&E and he didn't escape again for over a week.  During this time Trev's life was on the line due to the infection risk becoming septic.  Thankfully this didn't happen and the doctors also managed to save Trev's leg.   Two operations later, the infection was removed and Trev was recovering at home.  He's now fully recovered too.

My Shoulder Injury

I have been suffering with pain in my shoulder following my 2015 World games training and a fall which I had in March 2016.  I have had physio but in the end it was decided that my shoulder needed operating on.  In November I went under the knife and had bone shaved off in several places in order to stop the pain.

Today I have had my check up with the consultant and I'm able to start some easy training!  I'm so pleased to get back in the saddle.  Its going to take a while to get back into form, but I'm up for the challenge.
Don't get the wrong shoulder!!
Also today I have had news from the Cornwall Sports Partnership that my application into the Cornwall Talented Athlete Scheme has been accepted.  This gives me invaluable access to free access to sports facilities which is brilliant.  I'm really grateful for such great support.

In conclusion, its been a hard year in the Carroll household but on the sixth anniversary of my amazing kidney transplant, I'm always thankful for the health that mum's gift has bought me.  So, please, please, please consider signing up to the organ donor register you could just save a life like mine :-)

Here's wishing each and every one of you a happy and healthy 2017!

Time Flys When You're Having Fun!!

Well here I am again letting you know that another year has passed since I had my transplant FOUR years ago! The difference this transplant has made to my life is enormous. Whilst on dialysis, although I carried on with my life, the fatigue meant I spent the majority of my free time in bed or with my feet up wrapped in loads of blankets with the heating on full as I could never warm up. Now life is unbelievable! In my last blog in August I was telling you the story about my success at the British Transplant Games.  Since then I have had the honor of being asked to represent Team GB in the World Transplant Games in Argentina which will take place in August this year!! I entered the British Transplant Games initially for two reasons, firstly to raise awareness of organ donation and that is still extremely important to me, so if you haven't done so already please sign up here  but don't forget to discuss your wishes with your loved ones. Secondly to get fit and healt

Goodbye Dad

It  is with great sadness that I am writing this blog. My Dad, Terry Carroll, passed away on the 31st August following a cardiac arrest on Helston Bowling Green on the 24th August. We take great comfort in the fact that he was doing what he loved. Dad was taken to hospital by air ambulance and had his heart restarted, however, his brain was without oxygen for too long and we were told by the doctors that he was very unlikely to survive.   After three days with no response from dad, the doctor introduced us to the donor nurse. As you know, all of my family are advocates for organ donation, but we never thought for a minute that we would be on the other side of that conversation. Dad had been on the donor register for many years, long before I was unwell, and had made his wishes very clear, therefore we said yes.   The fact that dad wished to donate his organs meant that there was a delay before the doctors took dad off his ventilator, 12 hours or so.  We discovered that dad
