In the post today I received my log in for the "Renal Patients View". This is a website where you can log in and see your test results and other information.
This got me thinking whether this was good or bad. I know that I will probably look at it way too often and maybe actually get obsessed, for instance, I had blood taken today so I am sure that several times tomorrow and the day after I will be logging in until I can see my results.
I have also already gone through my results in detail and this could be rather scary for the fainthearted! For instance:
- Urea (Toxin Clearance) - Score is very high and suggests serious illness (I suppose I knew that!)
- Creatinine (Toxin Clearance) - Severe kidney failure (most dialysis patients have a score over 300 and mine is over 700!!)
- Potassium - mine is fine at the moment and that is the one I need to keep under control with my diet.
- There are then several tests regarding bone disease, my results are in the ok range but right at the bottom end.
- Haemoglobin (red blood cells) - is very low and this will make me breathless and tired, something I can truly agree with!
- eGFR - this uses loads of information to give a percentage kidney function, mine is 6 and this is classed as stage 5 of chronic kidney disease. Dialysis is generally started in the UK at between 8-10.
On a positive note, all the years of excessive drinking in my younger days has not caused any damage to my liver as the results for that is great!
So, is the renal view good or bad? I think it is great, for me anyway. It is a fantastic way of educating myself more about my condition, something which I knew nothing about only three weeks ago!
People describe kidney failure as the "silent killer" I can relate to this as it has been trying to finish me off for years! Tracy versus the silent killer, I know who'll win that one :-)
