Pre Op Tests

Time feels like it is in fast forward right now!  There are only five days until my transplant and today I was in Derriford with mum for all of our pre op tests.

Firstly we had more blood taken.  This time twelve phials each!!  More or less every blood test we have ever had have to be redone to ensure that nothing major has changed and also to ensure my blood is still happy mixing with mum's!!

Next we had to both have a chest x-ray and ECG.  Again to ensure that we are both still healthy enough to go through a major operation.

Then mum and I both had to see a junior doctor, mine from the renal department and mum's from the surgical department.  Their job was to "clerk" which basically meant going through all of our notes with us, looking at the results from the tests above, listening to our chests, checking blood pressure etc and then making notes in our file.

I then met with a senior renal consultant to discuss whether or not I would be prepared in enter into a drugs trial.  It is not for new drugs but to compare the two drugs which are currently used and find out which drug helps the kidney not to reject and to stay with you for longer.  After consideration, I decided to enter the trial as it will help people in my condition in the future, hopefully keep any transplanted kidney which they are fortunate enough to receive.

Finally I had to go to the pharmacy and pick up my first lot of immunosuppressant drugs which I have to start taking on Saturday ready for the transplant on Tuesday.

All in all I have to say I am beginning to get very excited.  I know there is still a long way to go before I am better, but the end is in sight!

Once again I want to thank my wonderful mum for what she is doing for me.  I don't know how I can ever show my gratitude enough but when I am back on my feet I'm sure we'll be celebrating with mum as the hero ;-)

SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES! Pirate FM's Local Heroes Awards 2016: Sports Achievement Award

On the 23rd March I had a surprise call from Pirate FM .  Unknowingly to me, Trevor had nominated me for a Pirate FM Local Hero Award for Sporting Achievement and I had won!!  Trevor and I were filmed on the 6th April by Pirate FM and they created this clip to show at the awards ceremony as to why I had won this award: Trevor and I were given four tickets to the black tie awards ceremony so we took along my mum, without whom I wouldn't have won the award and my brother Jon. We arrived at the Tregenna Castle Hotel at 7pm where I was presented with a sash to show that I was one of the winners for the night and we then went into the lounge where there was champagne and nibbles on tap! First visit to clinic and Anemia

Trev took time off work so that I would not be alone on my return home from hospital.  I had the best nights sleep back in my own bed!  I felt tired but no different to normal, it felt a little sureal that I had just discovered that I was going to be going through the most testing time of my life. On Thursday 9th September I had several appointments at the hospital.  The first was at the emergency eye clinic.  They told me that I had damage in three spots due to the high blood pressure but that would not be permanent damage.  This was a huge relief.  The thought of damaged eyesight scared me more than my kidney troubles.
